Abstract
Hong Kong independent documentaries remain an underexplored subject of scholarly study due to their accessibility—suppressed first by the city’s commercial film culture and recently by the closure of cinemas due to pedantic and censorship reasons. By examining works produced between 1965 and 2025, mainly in four thematic categories, this paper aims to demonstrate that HK indie docs resist any grand narratives in favor of unorthodox, sometimes conflicting, techniques and juxtapositions that capture the social and personal experience of Hong Kong itself. © 2025 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.
