Abstract

Based on self determination theory (SDT) this study proposed and tested a model of the influence of employees’ perceptions of high performance work systems (HPWS) use on creativity. Data were obtained from supervisor-subordinate dyads in multiple organizations (N=57) in China. Results of hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) revealed that HPWS was related to supervisor-rated employee creativity but this relationship was indirect through intrinsic motivation. Furthermore, transformational leadership amplified the intrinsic motivation-creativity relationship such that the relationship was stronger for high rather than low levels of transformational leadership.
