Abstract
A two-step and generally applicable synthesis for nonlinear optical (NLO) side-chain aromatic polyimides was developed. A hydroxy-containing NLO polyimide was synthesized with the disperse red 1 as the side-chain group, and characterized. The resulting NLO polyimide possessed excellent solubility and processibility even though the loading level of the side-chain chromophore was up to 42% by weight. A large electrooptic coefficient value of 30 pm/V and 10 pm/V was preliminarily achieved and a high thermal stability of the poled film at 100 °C was observed.
