Abstract

This article presents a bidirectional, modular partial power converter (BM-PPC) designed for applications that demand a wide operating voltage range and flexible bidirectional power flow modes. The architecture features modules with their high-voltage sides connected in series and low-voltage sides in parallel, operating in an interleaved manner. This configuration provides several merits, including reduced voltage and current stress on switching devices, wide operating voltage range, and flexible, scalable design, all while achieving high conversion efficiency. Each module functions as a bidirectional, zero-voltage-switched (ZVS) dual active clamped flyback-derived (DACF) dc-dc converter, facilitating seamless power flow in both power flow directions. A detailed description of the converter's operating principles and the interleaved voltage-sharing control strategy is given. A prototype rated at 2.4 kW, with high-voltage and low-voltage sides of 800 V/570–720 V, has been built and evaluated, achieving a maximum efficiency of 99.1%. Experimental results closely match theoretical predictions, confirming the performance of the proposed architecture. © 1982-2012 IEEE.
