Abstract
This video demonstrates the system used to produce the video installation HIDDEN NETWORKS. The system uses deep neural networks to select movie scenes that have similar movements, for instance where the main figures move in the same direction, with the same speed, or with a similar rhythm. This project pays tribute to the films of Louis Feuillade. The left side of the image shows one of Feuillade's most visually arresting scene, the opening of the film Les Vampires (1915). On the right are other scenes that have been identified by the system as having similar movements. The scenes have been selected from Les Vampires and from Feuillade's Judex (1916). The areas of each image that are most salient, from the standpoint of the neural net, have been highlighted, while less salient regions have been darkened. Another neural network slows down the action (x16) by using image interpolation, thus fostering close attention to the details of scene movement.
