Abstract

Nowadays, global warming has become a serious concern, and there is also an urgent attention to reduce energy consumptionjs and CO2 emission to make our cities safe, sustainable and resilient to climate change. Until now, various green practices have been adopted to decrease the energy consumptionjs as well as CO2 emission of the buildings in urban areas. However, the green roofs are suggested as the one effective tool that can help to reduce the large amount of CO2 in urbanized areas. This review comprises the up to date research on how green roof plants can help to decrease the CO2 emission, how can the effective design of the green roof enhance the benefits, and suggest the future research opportunities. This study focuses on how green roof vegetation's influences the CO2 sequestration, CO2 emission and air pollution in urban areas. This study also evaluates how plant, substrate selection affects the green roof performance. This review study is also suggested the future research pathways how green roof can combine with other related technologies for the multiple benefits which can help policymakers to adopt the green roof practices on a larger scale.
