Abstract
A discussion about the provision of fire safety in environmentally-friendly, sustainable buildings in Hong Kong is presented. New buildings are being designed and existing buildings upgraded with construction elements and electrical and mechanical systems, to improve their sustainability. It is reported that problems have arisen when designing the fire safety provisions during the upgrade of these buildings, either because building and fire safety codes in Hong Kong do not cover green and sustainable issues or because many of the recommended fire safety measures prevent buildings from meeting the criteria of being green and sustainable.
