Abstract

In this entry, we approach the relationship between gesture and culture by examining the place that gesture studies have been accorded in France. By tracing how attitudes towards gestures in France changed from pre-eighteenth century up until contemporary France, we demonstrate the various ways that gestures in France have been understood, used, studied, and even abandoned (if only on rare occasions).
