Abstract

In 2012, City University of Hong Kong established a new Gateway Education Programme that aims to broaden students' interdisciplinary knowledge and nurture student innovations under the Discovery-enriched Curriculum. To support the initiative, a novel idea was proposed for the creation of a special active learning space with advanced technologies that have a strong potential to influence society. The result was the creation of a Gateway Education Laboratory (GE Lab) with a highly configurable layout equipped with 3D printers, a cloud-based eLearning tool and user-friendly scientific instruments to enrich the student learning experience. It opened in 2013 to support students from all disciplines to work together, acquire interdisciplinary knowledge, generate ideas through collaborative learning and realize their dream designs. Course leaders report that the GE Lab provides a very good physical environment that enhances student attitudes and supports various instructive styles that traditional classrooms fail to provide. Students are motivated by the collaborative learning activities and the use of advanced technologies. Talented students with innovative ideas are identified and nurtured with very positive outcomes. Their creative achievements have been recognized both regionally and internationally.
