Abstract
Utilizing the ubiquitous phenomenon of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) a Magnesium Fluoride (MgF2) prism-coupled gas sensing probe in Kretschmann configuration has been proposed and characterized. The sensing probe exhibits an extremely high sensitivity of 220°/refractive index unit (RIU) in visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum. The sensor's geometry utilizes bi-metallic layer of noble metals Rhodium (Rh) and Silver (Ag) as plasmonic metal layer. Field enhancing Silicon is used on top of the bi-metallic layer. The sensing probe is enabled for gas detection by depositing Graphene over Silicon. Graphene also contributes in field and therefore the sensitivity enhancement. Each of the constituent layers is optimized for maximum sensitivity at 632 nm wavelength for a change in the refractive index (RI) of 0.0005 RIU around the ambient RI of unity.
