Abstract

Nanotechnology has changed our perception, aspirations, and the ability to shape the material world. In the construction industry, nanotechnology developments have also demonstrated the potential for introducing multi-functional properties to cementitious composites. Over the past two decades, promising research has been conducted to explore and characterize nano-tailored cementitious composites. Still, many of the areas related to design, manufacturing, characterization, and application of nano-tailored cement composites need further detailed studies to fully understand the behavior of such nanocomposites. This chapter briefly describes the currently used methods at each stage of the nano-tailored cement composites, gives insight into future developments, and introduces prospective methods from different fields of study to understand the behavior of nano-tailored cementitious composites. With the increase in the application of nano-tailored cement composites, environmental and human health risks are considerably increased, which need to be resolved on priority. Similarly, some of the critical challenges with the application of nanomaterials in cementitious composites involve dispersion, bulk characterization, large-scale production, cost, and recyclability. The transition of nano-tailored cementitious composites from laboratory scale to real-life application is supposed to bring a profound revolution to the field of cement materials and infrastructures. This will have significant economic, social, and environmental impacts.
