From Parasocial to Multisocial Interaction: What Drives Fan Community Members to Become Fan Labors?

Research output: Conference PapersRGC 33 - Other conference paper

Abstract

Fan labor in support of celebrities is a new phenomenon that is getting increasingly popular in entertainment industries around the world. This study serves as an initial effort to investigate what kind of labor work fans are willing to provide, and what factors drive them to provide such labor for free. A sample of 307 young female fans were surveyed and the results showed that parasocial interaction with celebrity and identification with fan community are directly or indirectly associated with fan labor behaviors. The findings suggest that fans’ psychological involvement with celebrities may be transformed to identification with the overall fan community. The parasocial relationships that fans have with celebrities and their identification with fan communities both drive them to invest money, time, and energy in promoting the celebrities.
