N2 - The state-owned architectural design institute was a product of planned economy emerging in the 1950s, when the government was carrying out large-scale national reconstruction with a political vision. This chapter describes an evolution of the institute from its inception to a market reform and onto its current mode of practice. By studying historical documents, prominent designs, and leading architects, this chapter explores the way the institutes operated in the building of urban fabric of the cities nation-wide as a productive office of the state. This chapter provides both detailed cases and general perspectives for a comprehensive understanding of the institute.
