Abstract
RR58 aluminium alloy rings of two different geometries were subjected to isothermal upsetting in the temperature range 300-800 K, using some popular lubricants. Friction factors are evaluated using theoretical and experimental calibration curves available in literature. It is found that theoretical curves predict higher values of friction, and the actual friction factors are obtained by using suitable correction factors. The influence of specimen geometry on the friction factor is studied. Finally, with the aid of visco-plastic analysis, the effect of friction and temperature on the material flow and die filling in extrusion-forging process is highlighted.
