Abstract
During these difficult times of social distancing and national lockdowns, we are initiating a networked collaborative sound event spanning all corners of the ocean. 84 selected artists are invited to participate with a stereo sound/piece/work each with the length of between 20-60 seconds. We are focusing on the ocean: this series of freq_wave's coincides with the release of Territorial Agency: Oceans in Transformation, TBA21–Academy's latest long-term research commission. The commission is designed around seven oceanic trajectories, to be gradually released on the Ocean Archive from 20 May onwards, thus encouraging an interplay of the sonic and the spatial dimensions of the sea. We are acknowledging the ocean as a living entity and are actively supporting the notion of the climate emergency, yet want to reiterate that if we act now, we can support the ocean in regenerating tremendously within the next 30 years. We are willing for a cleaner ocean, not only relieved from toxic materials and overly abundant plastics, but also from acoustic pollution and other kinds of harmful activities putting immense pressure on its ecosystems, such as over-fishing and other extractive pursuits. Deep awareness and understanding of the rapidly changing climate, the rising sea levels and the accelerating mass extinction are issues at the core of this project. The seven trajectories inquire into the transformative processes unfolding in the global oceans and layering the patterned information inscribed in their data sets and indicating the extent and magnitude of human intervention. Approximately following the seven trajectories, we have taken the Seven Seas as a departing point of the freq_wave project to define the seven presentations online.
