Abstract

Web-based interactive collaborative sound art, commissioned by TBA21–Academy for the Ocean Archive: “a digital organism for a living ocean”, curated by CM von Hauswolff and Alonso Vazquez. Lindborg is a participating artist. A freq_wave is a rogue wave: unpredictable, sudden, and can impact with tremendous force. Curated by Carl Michael von Hausswolff and co-curated by Alonso Vázquez, this commission corroborates the work of 84 sound artists whose compositions integrate hydrophone recordings within the aquatic frequency ranges audible to the human ear. This interactive web-based collaboration springs from a spontaneous act of solidarity and the will to connect and express ourselves, bringing oceanic creativity to the fore. This is also an act of remembering. Our current health and economic crisis is inextricably linked to the long-lasting climate chaos, social inequalities and environmental injustices violently manifesting amongst many humans and other than humans around the world. We see a future in collaboration, imagination, and a bit of bravado, so we have created an extensive sound project spanning across seven seas to show how art and culture can make the complexities of marine degradation and pollution audible, and to bring attention to the delicate soundscapes of the sea. Launching on Ocean Archive on May 23, 2020, freq_wave: seven seas loosely meanders along the Trajectories of TBA21–Academy’s latest long-term research commission, Territorial Agency: Oceans in Transformation, released on the Ocean Archive on May 20. The artists have been divided into groups of twelve and allocated a specific trajectory. Within them, each artist has used and generated sounds in a designated frequency range, creating a bathymetric constellation. In the coming weeks, this work will be presented in seven online sound installations, addressing Territorial Agencies’ seven trajectories. Participating sound artists:Jana Winderen, Finnbogi Petursson, Tommi Grönlund/Petteri Nisunen, PerMagnus Lindborg, Mike Harding, Kent Tankred, BJNilsen, Jacob Kirkegaard, Maia Urstad, Christine Ödlund, Peter Rehberg, Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Zavoloka, Dungeon Acid, Christopher Chaplin, Klara Lewis, Joachim Nordwall, Francisco Meirino, Bethan Kellough, Christina Kubisch, Anna von Hausswolff, Lise-Lotte Norelius, Puce Mary, Nadine Byrne, Chris Watson, Ulf Bilting, Brandon LaBelle, JG Thirlwell, Dark Morph, Yann Novak , Chandra Shukla, Tim Story, Dorit Chrysler, Stephen O’Malley, John Duncan, Okkyung Lee, Maria Chavez, Randall Dunn, Kali Malone, Yan Jun, Kim Ngọc, Gus Ferguson, Jim O’Rourke, Minoru Sato, Bana Haffar, Dickson Dee, Ryoji Ikeda, Basel Abbas/Ruanne Abou-Rahme, James Webb, Lawrence English, Francisco Lopez, Cielo Vargas, Felix Blume, Aoki Takamasa, Jonny Nash/Esmee Geerken, RAMZi, Alice Eldridge, Lisa Schonberg, Asma Ghanem, Yannick Dauby, Von Lichtern, Sun Araw, Manja Ristić, Maia Koenig, Yambe Tam/Dylan Henry Price, Soundwalk Collective, Lary 7, Mark Fell, Robert Crouch, Schneider TM, Scot Jenerik, Thierry Charollais, Tetsuo Furudate, Scanner, Leif Elggren, Tatiana Zobnina/Alonso Vázquez, Daniel Menche, Carl Abrahamsson, Dror Feiler, Mats Lindström, Zachary Paul, Michael Esposito, Adi Newton, and Leonel Vásquezfreq_wave is the second cycle of installations that started with freq_out in 2002. freq_out is a sound installation comprising 12 individual sound works each utilizing a specific frequency range, made on-site, and amplified to act as a single, generative sound-space.//freq_wave: 7 seasCommissioned and produced by TBA21–AcademyCurator: Carl Michael von HausswolffCo-Curator: Alonso VázquezProject Management: Petra LinhartováMixer Conceptualiser: Carl Michael von HausswolffMixer Programmer: Ulf BiltingMixer Graphic Design: Ulf Bilting and Alonso VázquezGraphic Design: Alonso VázquezOcean Archive Programmer: Matthew BerrymanCoordination & Communication: TBA21–Academy - Tristan Acutt, Sam Berlian, Mark Ferkul, Dolly Church, Eirini Lemos, and Katarina RakuščekDirector TBA21–Academy: Markus Reymann
