Abstract

Temporally modulated metasurfaces have recently received considerable attention in academic interest due to their interesting frequency translation and non-reciprocity properties. This paper introduces a novel time-modulating-metasurface-coated leaky-wave antenna, named as four-dimensional (4-D) leaky-wave antenna, to achieve frequency translation. The proposed 4-D leaky-wave antenna can shift the frequency spectrum of the incident field and radiate high-directivity beam. This is achieved by simply switching each RF switch embedded on the substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) in a predetermined periodic coding sequence. Measurement results are given to demonstrate the proposed concept and its frequency translation capability. © 2022 IEICE
