Abstract
The neutron optics design and performance for VULCAN-the SNS engineering diffractometer-is presented. A gradually tapered focusing neutron guide is used to deliver desired beam divergence at sample position. Selection of instrument resolution is achieved with an interchangeable guide-collimator system in the last 3 m of the neutron guide system. The effect of focusing on instrument resolution was evaluated and the strategy for detector deployment is discussed. © 2008 Elsevier B.V.
