Abstract

The liquid phase sintering behavior of the W-Cu and W-Cu-Co systems is described. It is shown that the density of the sintered products can be greatly improved by both the addition of Co to W-Cu and by mechanical alloying of the elemental powders prior to sintering. The addition of Co allows for greater densification during the rearrangement stage of liquid phase sintering because of improved wetting of the liquid phase. Mechanical alloying allows for greater densification during the rearrangement stage for two reasons. Firstly, the process leads to improved mixing allowing for a more homogeneous distribution of the liquid-forming phase. Secondly, mechanical alloying yields an irregular powder morphology which experiences a greater driving force for rearrangement than quasi-spherical particles. The grain size in the sintered W-Cu-Co materials is in the range of 5-10 μm. The fine grain size is a result of the fact that the primary mechanism for grain growth in liquid phase sintering - solution-reprecipitation - is greatly suppressed in the W-Cu-Co system.
