Fieldnotes on Preparatory Work with Fungi

My work focuses on artistic projects that engage with biological matter and, specifically, on works that highlight relations between yeasts and plants, microorganisms, animals, and humans. In keeping with the advice of my thesis supervisor regarding best practices for my research, I perform preparatory work for my study in a DIY laboratory. The preparatory work is needed to understand the basics of dealing with yeast and the fundamentals of DIY laboratory techniques, as some of the artists in my research use DIY methods instead of professional labs. In this text, I share my notes and reflections on my experiences in the lab, including the jottings on making the plates to grow Saccharomyces cerevisiae or so-called baker’s yeast.
