Abstract
The bi-stable behavior of the through-thickness functionally graded material (FGM) composites subjected to a temperature gradient field is studied in the paper. Considering the advantage of the FGMs’ adaptability of the temperature variation and the bi-stability of the un-symmetric or anti-symmetric lay-ups, the presented model has a potential application in the wide fields. The model of the thermal-induced bi-stable FGM un-symmetric shell is presented by the finite element analysis. The different kind FGM lay-ups are simulated successfully and discussed in detail. The curved shapes, the temperature load history and stress distributions are also given to understand this bi-stability phenomenon. The prediction and control of the bi-stable characteristics is helpful to design and manufacture different types of special mechanism and machine.
