Abstract

In recent years, externally bonded Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) has been considered as an innovative way for steel structure retrofitting attributed to the high strength-to-weight ratio, excellent corrosion resistance and fatigue performance. This paper presents an experimental study on the fatigue behaviour of steel beams strengthened with CFRP laminates, with special focus on the efficiency of mechanical anchorage combined with adhesive bonding. Two types of structural adhesives and two types of anchors were selected. For adhesive bonded specimens, cohesive failure happened while CFRP rupture was observed for specimens with both adhesive bonding and mechanical anchorage, which indicated that the CFRP materials were better utilized in the latter specimens. In comparison with adhesive bonded specimens, the fatigue life of the specimens with extra mechanical anchorage was significantly extended. It is therefore demonstrated that the anchorage system was effective to improve the fatigue behaviour of cracked steel beams.
