Abstract

Interface shear test is always used for testing the interface between soil and pile. In the present study, numerical results of two-dimensional discrete element simulations of interface shear test on dense sand samples under constant normal stress, constant volume and constant normal stiffness boundary conditions are presented. The shear strain and stress fields under different boundary conditions are shown to similar patterns. The evaluation of stress and porosity in pre-assigned sampling windows is made to further elucidate the shearing mechanism within the shear box. We found that dilation mainly happened within a zone of 10D50 above the interface, and the stress ratio (shear stress/normal stress) decreased linearly from the interface to the upper boundary. However, the peak stress ratio at the interface reaches the maximum value under the constant normal stress boundary condition, and minimum value under the constant volume boundary condition. © 2015 Taylor & Francis Group.
