Abstract
In this project, we seek to understand the evolution of the public discourse about immigration and immigrants as a function of changes in the social, political, and economic conditions in the United States. Using machine assisted content and sentiment analyses, we first examined nearly 100,000 articles related to immigration issues published in the New York Times from 1947 to 2005. Then, we analyzed the impacts of demographic shifts and economic and political cycles on the quantity, sentiment, and topical interest of immigration related news reporting.
