The play/film ‘The Sunset Limited’ by Cormac McCarthy (author of The Counselor, The Road, No Country for Old Men, Child of God, All the Pretty Horses) provides the data for investigating the correlation between socio-contextual features and the exchange between the two characters in this story. One character is an ex-convict (played in the film version by Samuel L Jackson), the other is a professor (played in the film by Tommy Lee Jones). There are many factors in the film than just text. For example, the intonation, the tone, the pausing, the facial expressions and the surrounding environment. All these factors play a role to help convey the message/text. Combining a systemic-functional analysis of the verbal exchanges between the two characters with a multimodal analysis of the film using the Multimodal Analysis (MMA) Video software, we explore how our understanding is shaped through choices in how the film is shot and what is said by whom.
