Abstract
Qualitative in-depth interviews were carried out to understand the experiences perceived by 21 Chinese gay and bisexual youths aged from 14-25 in Hong Kong before and after joining an empowerment-based HIV/AIDS prevention project in Hong Kong. Few themes emerged from their interviews : 1) A safe space to go; 2) A peer support network has been established; 3) An opportunity to explore sexual identity; 4)An opportunity to participate in the community; 5) Homophobia in the larger social context is still pervasive; 6) Effective interventions are targeting on reducing social marginalization and celebration of diversity. The author discussed social cultural context and implications of research findings for effective HIV prevention strategies and social service interventions.
