Abstract

This essay draws on on game studies, existentialism and post-phenomenological philosophy of technology to analyse the ways in which computer games present themselves to be interpreted by their players. To complement the “ludic” paradigm according to which games are explained with concepts such as rules, winning, and losing, this essay approaches computer games as multistable technological artifacts – hybrids of subjectivity, process and materiality – in explaining which the paradigms emphasising the linkage between traditional games and computer games are not the only viable option. This essay suggests intersubjective validity and existential authenticity as ways in which to articulate modalities of significance in solitary computer game play.
