Abstract

Despite relatively substantial references on political discussion in the field of political communication and political sciences, much has been left unexplored about the causal relationship between news media use and political discussion. Employing longitudinal data from ANES 2008-2009 Panel Study, this paper adopted a cross-lag path analysis which is widely used to infer causal associations in data from longitudinal research design. Using structural equation modeling, measurement model and structural model were specified and the analysis results confirmed the reciprocal effects between news exposure and political discussion and these effects did not change by adding exogenous control variables. Limitation and future research directions were also discussed.
