Abstract
A new approach for facial gesture analysis is proposed using evidential reasoning. The six universal expressions, anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, and surprise, are encoded using a selected and modified subset of the FACS code. Cartoon drawings for the different expressions are used to get feature vectors to be used for recognition. The Dempster-Shafer theory of evidential reasoning is applied to combine evidence represented by the facial features. The study demonstrates the feasibility of applying the Dempster-Shafer theory to facial gesture recognition.
