Abstract

In this paper we present an accurate approximation for multiplexing gain for independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) traffic sources under the zero buffer assumptions. The approximation is based on Tchebycheff's Theorem. The contribution of the paper is twofold: (1) for Gaussian sources we show that multiplexing gain values varies from 1 representing no gain at all for constant bit rate sources (the case of zero variance) to square root of the number of sources (when sources are very bursty), and (2) an accurate approximation of multiplexing gain for the case where sources are non-Gaussian. The results are verified by comparison with exact results.
