Abstract

This is a single-channel video shown in the Traverse video Festival in Toulouse, France. The video was accompanied by an artist's seminar where Hector Rodriguez introduced his artistic method and concepts, paying special attention to the relationship between mathematics and cinema.

The video integrates experimental film history and computational analysis meethods. The film being analyzed here is Stan Brakhage’s 1963 experimental masterwork Mothlight. A software designed by artist analyzes the amount of suprise or novelty (i.e., new information) contained in a frame relative to immediately preceding frames. The amount of information is displayed as a graph. If a frame is visually very different from previous frames, the graph will display more intensity. In this three-dimensional version, the sections of the graph shown in the foreground represent the current frame, and those further back represent preceding frames.

Bibliographic Note
