Abstract

Solid state core level binding energies have been measured by ESCA for 1,7,13,19-tetraaza-4,16-dioxa-10,22,27,32-tetrathiatricyclo- left bracket 17. 5. 5. 5**7**,**1**3 right bracket tetrathiacontane (Ia), its bis-copper(II)perchlorate complex (Ib), 1,7-diaza-4,10-dithiacyclododecane (IIa) and its mono copper(II)perchlorate complex (IIb). The Sp//3/////2 and N1s levels were found to shift to higher binding energies upon complexation. This is suggested to be due to a flow of charge from the ligand to the copper(II) ion and indicates considerable covalent character of the bonds between copper and the heteroatoms.
