Abstract

This study explored the relationships between three types of Internet use (i.e., educational, socializing, and entertainment) and externalizing behaviors in early adolescents. Using a representative sample of early adolescents in China (N = 831, M_age = 11.78), the result revealed a negative association between educational Internet use and externalizing behaviors, and this relationship was mediated by depression and self-control. Meanwhile, entertainment Internet use was found to be indirectly associated with a higher level of externalizing behavior via self-control. Last, socializing Internet use was found to have no effect on externalizing behaviors and the two mediators. Theoretical implications for Internet use and externalizing behaviors, as well as practical implications for problematic behavior interventions are discussed.
