Abstract
The fine structure of zero phonon lines in the electronic absorption spectra of lanthanide ion systems is interpreted by an effective spin Hamiltonian model. The splittings of several cm-1 observed for lanthanide ions with interionic separations near 1 nm in elpasolite lattices are attributed to superexchange interactions. © 2007 American Chemical Society.
