Abstract

Iridium has an exceptionally high elastic modulus, critical resolved shear stress, and work hardening rate. It is the only face centered cubic metal known to exhibit a cleavage-type fracture at ambient temperature. Its deformation behavior has been investigated by various workers, and their results are inconsistent and are generally attributed to impurity effects. The paper reports on a study of deformation and fracture behavior of Ir, with particular emphasis on the effects and control of trace elements.
