Abstract

Al-5 Si alloy samples were spike forged at various temperatures using different lubricants. The effect of die-specimen interface friction on material flow and die filling is studied. It is found that friction has a profound influence on the material flow in this type of extrusion-forging operation and only high friction facilitates adequate die filling in spite of high forming forces encountered. Visco-plastic studies were also conducted using split grided samples to evaluate the material flow and severity of deformation. The results are presented in the form of effective strain contours.
