Abstract

In a IEEE-IAS transaction paper scheduled for publication in 1992, the authors studied the dynamics of break-up of a free floating droplet under electric fields in microgravity. The present paper covers an experimental study of the dynamics of the deformation and breakup of a sessile droplet placed on a plane electrode made out of: a) polished brass b) aluminum. The breakup was filmed with a with a high speed camera at 2000 frames per second. The paper contains selected series of film frames which show at definite intervals: 1) The apex and resting angles of the Taylor cone formation 2) The gradual deformation of the Taylor cone leading to breakup 3) The oscillation of the sessile droplet after the breakup of the Taylor cone tip. 4) Some unusual deformation of the Taylor cone tip. Most of the experiments were carried out with tap water. The authors will also present a series of photographs showing the dynamics of droplet breakup in the case of a highly viscous, dielectric liquid (Paraplex G-54). A mathematical modelling carried out in the referenced Doctoral Thesis to be completed in 1992 at the University of Western Ontario was able to demonstrate the break up and the oscillation frequency of the sessile droplet under electric fields below the intensity required for breakup.
