Dual-Channel MOSFET Pack-Based Bidirectional Single-Inductor Multiple-Output (SIMO) Converter with a Compact Structure

Abstract

This paper proposes a novel bidirectional single inductor multiple-output (SIMO) converter that employs a single inductor at the power stage to achieve adjustable bidirectional power conversion between a DC source and multiple AC sources. In forward DC-AC power inversion mode, it powers multiple independent high-frequency AC loads simultaneously from one DC supply. In the reverse AC-DC power conversion mode, one or more AC sources are regulated to feed a DC load. Compared to existing bidirectional SIMO converters, the proposed converter guarantees a positive DC voltage output during the reverse conversion with a reduced number of power switches. Additionally, dual-channel MOSFET packs are utilized to simplify the circuit structure and improve efficiency. Experimental results verified a single-inductor three-output (SITO) prototype, as well as its potential in peer-to-peer wireless power transfer (P2P-WPT) applications by using one proposed bidirectional SITO converter to power another wirelessly via WPT coils.
