Abstract

An influential historian of the mid-Tang period, Du You was the compiler of the Comprehensive Compendium of Institutions (Tongdian) , one of the most important institutional histories of imperial China. As an experienced politician who served in Chang’an (modern Xi’an) and various local offices, Du You wrote a new kind of history focusing on the development of state institutions and their practical uses in statecraft. This established a significant historiographical tradition that would continue for centuries and culminate in the Ten Comprehensive Histories.
