Divergent value and reading position in multimodal news discourse

Research output: Conference Papers › RGC 33 - Other conference paper › peer-review

Abstract

Discursive new values analysis (DNVA) is employed to explore the construction of newsworthiness related to events and people in the news. Appraisal framework helps to examine how attitudinal resources are used for bonding (Stenglin 2004)reading communities, or what kinds of values the news wants readers to share around events and people. The combination of DNVA with Appraisal analysis can provide new insights into the ways in which reading positions are established through negotiating values and responding to news values constructed in news discourse. There are more reading positions than “preferred reading”(Hall 1977: 344) not only because “it is always possible to … decode an event within more than one mapping”, but also when readers comment, as a feedback, they are" aimed at other viewers”(Bell 1991: 88) so readings can comply, resist, negotiate and even discord with a subject position.
