Abstract

The differential diagnosis of abdominal distension with a systemic impact on calves includes abomasitis syndrome, abomasal volvulus, and type III and IV abomasal ulcers. The prognosis of these abomasal problems is poor, and they are often associated with systemic inflammatory and/or a septic reaction leading to the death of the animal. Considering the medical and/or surgical emergency that they represent, this article provides diagnostic and therapeutic assistance to the practitioner faced with such a clinical picture. The usefulness of transabdominal ultrasound, interpretation of haemato-biochemical results and the nature of the recommended medical care (fluid therapy, antibiotic therapy and analgesia) are described.
