Abstract
This chapter examines the various approaches discourse analysts have taken to the study of health communication. It begins by explaining the challenges involved in communicating about health in different settings and what distinguishes discourse analysis from other perspectives. It then goes on to survey the major approaches to health communication discourse analysts have taken over the past several decades, with particular attention given to Conversation Analysis, Interactional Sociolinguistics, and narrative analysis. It ends by arguing that changes in health behaviors and healthcare practices, particularly involving digital technologies, will require discourse analysts to expand their perspective beyond traditional doctor–patient communication and explore the way discourse about health travels “beyond the clinic,” not just across physical settings but also across multiple semiotic modes and media © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
