Abstract

This chapter introduces the developmental and life-course (DLC) paradigm and provides examples showing how DLC intervention can be effective in producing short- and long-term positive impacts on individual development and wellbeing. We begin by briefly introducing the DLC approach. In Section 2, principles of DLC intervention are discussed including risk and protective factors, developmental pathways and the core concepts of DLC. We then consider the origins and types of DLC intervention and their common forms and aims (Section 3). Section 4 reviews the effectiveness of DLC intervention programs and provides a case study of the Seattle Social Development Project. Finally, we provide some closing remarks regarding the development of sustainable DLC policy.
