Abstract
The background, contents and structure of performance-based fire engineering approach are explained, and its advantage and disadvantage are discussed after reviewing the development of the performance-based fire engineering all over the world. The paper describs the impact of this approach to the fire protection system in China. Finally, referring to development situation and some successful experience abroad, some suggestions for developing performance-based fire engineering design in China are presented.
