Abstract

In this paper, a user-adaptive ankle foot orthosis (AFO) with changeable orientations of joint axes is presented. Firstly, the structure of the orthosis is introduced and the mechanism of user adaptation is analyzed. Then, based on the structure of the orthotic device, the velocity transmission ratio between the orthosis and the ankle joint is derived. Additionally, the calculated value of the velocity transmisson ratio is compared with the one obtained from kinematic simulations in ADAMS software. After that, the dynamic analysis of the ankle and foot complex that is combined with the orthosis is conducted. Specifically, the dynamic functions of the AFO and foot system are set up; based on them, the angular tracking simulation is performed. Finally, the hardware system of the orthotic device is presented and the testing work shows that the orthosis can track the normal angular and speed curves of the ankle joint well.
