Abstract
Group Support Systems, although well established in the US, is very much a new discipline and area of interest in Hong Kong. The purpose of this research is to investigate how we may most usefully and appropriately introduce GSS to Hong Kong so as to reap the maximum benefits. To accomplish this, we have taken a two-fold approach. Quite apart from the technical literature that describes the successes of GSS, primarily in the North American environment, we have undertaken a detailed review of the cultural and socio-psychological literature focusing in particular on status and minority influence - factors particularly important in Hong Kong's high power distance society. Further, we have developed an instrument that measures meetings (both with and without electronic support) with the intent that we closely examine existing meetings and their processes in Hong Kong both before and after GSS implementation. By adopting this pre- and post- approach, we can not only gauge the most appropriate way to implement GSS in the first place, identifying problems and suggesting solutions through the technology, but also measure just how successful we have been with the implementation. Our samples in the research will be real world groups in the business arena.
