Abstract

Fritillaria is a kind of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) served as antitussives, antiasthmatic and expectorant widely used in Chinese communities. The major biologically active compounds contained in Fritillaria are reported to be isosteroidal alkaloids: Ebeiedine, Ebeiedinone, isover ticine, Ver ticine, Ver ticinone, Hupehenine, Ebeienine, Peimissine and Imperialine. Chromatographic detection of these compounds is limited due to the characteristics of isosteroidal alkaloids, development of appropriate methods has always been a challenge for the scientists. Here we described a method frequently utilized to determine total alkaloids -- Acid-Dye Colorimetry, a classic method suitable to detect various alkaloids, especially for the total alkaloids quantification.
