Abstract
We design a mode multiplexer/demultiplexer with two cascaded waveguide couplers formed along the horizontal and vertical directions, respectively. The LP01 and two orthogonal LP11 modes of the waveguide can be spatially separated with a crosstalk lower than 20 dB using a device length shorter than 10 mm. This device could be implemented with the polymer waveguide technology for its ability to realize vertical couplers. © 2013 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.
