Abstract

This paper introduces a fan-beam antenna using gradient refractive index metasurface. The unit cell of the metamaterial lens is composed of four rectangular rings. The proposed lens is composed of impedance matching layer and core layer. They both contribute to the fan-beam generation. Moreover, impedance matching layer is used to enhance the radiation efficiency of the lens and reduce the lens height. The realized lens is with height of about 0.24 λ0, where λ0 is the wavelength at 10 GHz in free space. The reflection coefficient is lower than -12 dB from 7 to 13 GHz. The results show that the 3 dB beamwidths on E and H-plane are 18° and 40°, respectively. Meantime, the realized gain is about 16.4 at center frequency.
