Design and Modelling of a Mega-Hertz PCB Resonator with Hybrid Inductive and Capacitive Wireless Power Transfer Capability

Abstract

This paper reports a study on hybrid inductive and capacitive wireless power transfer through using a new design of printed circuit board (PCB) resonator. Unlike conventional PCB resonators that rely solely on magnetic flux for coupling, our approach incorporates a sandwich structure with asymmetric copper trace patterns to enable both magnetic and electric flux coupling, resulting in a higher power transfer capability. We build accurate circuit models for quantitative analysis and provide experimental results for validation. The data demonstrates that in addition to the inductive coupling path, the capacitive coupling improves the power transfer capability by 38%, while maintaining a high efficiency of 95%. © 2024 IEEE.
